En søndag, et pudevår og en notesbog./ A Sunday, a pillow case and a notebook.

This Thursday I added a some more clippings to my vision board that’s eternally developing. And as I did I also noted the striped pillow (pictured above) and the thought that followed: “I’d like one of those”. But I had no intentions of paying kr. 550 for one pillow case nor any desire to go to the fabric store to scout for similar fabric. Which is why the above shown picture actually did not make it onto the board itself. Nonetheless, the wish had been sent out. 🙂

But then something “strange” happened on Saturday night, as I was chatting to my mother-in-law in the kitchen. She mentioned, seemingly out of nowhere, that she had some fabric she’d like to show me. Fabric, that she thought her Finnish grandmother had woven, and her mother and aunt had embroidered for her wedding gift. A gift, she’d had in her drawers for 30-40 years. Beautifully crafted, thick fabric was what ascended from the drawers, with red lines running along the sides.
“Is this something you’d like some of?”, she asked me. Which she hadn’t needed to for in the instance I saw the fabric I had to laugh to myself. A coincidence? Nope.

“I’d love to”, I answered. This was even better than what I’d seen in the magazine; this fabric was many years old and in great condition. It’s quality is something that’s hard to find these days not to mention it’s history. A history that traces back over time, to Finland, a story of which I am now part. So I chose a couple of dishtowels with red embroidering and my mother-in-law’s initials, LT.

Finally time to sew again.

Sunday morning I felt like sitting down to sew. To take some time to honor the history and time spent on this beautiful, crisp fabric.
But –  I didn’t have a zipper for the casing?
The answer to this came all on its own as this DIY on doing a pillow casing without zipper found me. So I ended up with one large pillow case and – unexpectedly – created a notebook from the scraps. Perhaps an idea for a bullet journal? (Maybe even as a Christmas present?)
